Naples Historic Center

The historic center of Naples (Centro Storico), inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, is one of the densest accumulations of historical and artistic monuments in the world, built above the continuously inhabited urban grid of the ancient Greek colony of Neapolis founded around 470 BC. The area is defined by three parallel decumani—ancient east-west streets—of which the Via dei Tribunali is the most atmospheric and vibrant. Along these lanes and their intersecting alleys, visitors encounter baroque churches at almost every corner: the Basilica di San Lorenzo Maggiore, containing excavated remains of the ancient Greek agora beneath its nave; the Gesù Nuovo church with its extraordinary diamond-pointed volcanic stone facade; and Santa Chiara with its famous majolica-tiled cloister. Via San Gregorio Armeno, branching off Spaccanapoli, is entirely devoted to workshops crafting the elaborate nativity scenes (presepe) for which Naples has been famous since the 18th century. The street food culture is integral to any visit: visitors sample sfogliatella pastries, cuoppo fritto (mixed fried street food), and authentic Neapolitan pizza from institutions such as L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele on Via Cesare Sersale. Beneath the streets, the Naples underground (Napoli Sotterranea) offers guided tours through ancient Greek and Roman cisterns, aqueducts, and World War II air raid shelters. The Duomo di San Gennaro houses the famous ampoules of the blood of Naples' patron saint, which liquefy three times per year in ceremonies attended by thousands. Allow a full day minimum for meaningful exploration; two days permits a deeper engagement with the area's churches, palaces, and art collections.
