Castel dell'Ovo

Castel dell'Ovo (Castle of the Egg) is the oldest standing fortification in Naples, Campania, Italy, occupying a small rocky island—the former ancient islet of Megaride—that juts into the Bay of Naples on the Lungomare seafront promenade. The site has been continuously occupied since at least the 9th century BC, when a Greek settlement existed here; a Roman villa of the historical figure Lucullus later stood on the same spot. The current fortress dates substantially from the Norman period of the 12th century, with major additions made under the Angevin and Aragonese kings of Naples. The castle takes its unusual name from a legend—attributed by early modern writers to the Roman poet Virgil's reputation as a medieval sorcerer—that Virgil concealed a magical egg within the castle's foundations, and if the egg breaks, the castle and Naples itself will fall. Entrance to the castle is free, making it one of the most accessible historical attractions in Naples. Visitors cross a causeway and enter through a series of vaulted passages and stairways leading to the upper terraces and towers, where panoramic views extend across the Bay of Naples, Vesuvius, Capri, and the urban sweep of the Neapolitan waterfront. The castle's interior spaces host temporary art exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year. The surrounding Borgo Marinari—a small marina community at the base of the causeway—offers a cluster of seafood restaurants with outdoor seating directly above the water. The Lungomare seafront promenade connecting the castle to the city centre is one of Naples' most pleasant walking routes, especially in the early evening when Neapolitans take their passeggiata.
