Lago Arvo Circuit (Sila Lake Trail)

The Lago Arvo Circuit is a gentle 12-kilometre loop around one of the Sila plateau's largest reservoirs, set at roughly 1,280 metres within Sila National Park in Cosenza Province, Calabria. The trail is based at the lakeside resort village of Lorica, reached by car from Cosenza via the SS107 highway and the SP256; free parking is available near the village waterfront and there is no permit requirement. Public transport is limited, so a private vehicle is the practical option. Despite its length, the circuit involves minimal cumulative elevation change, following the shoreline contour on flat to gently rolling ground, which makes it one of the most approachable longer walks in the Sila. The surface is a mix of compacted forest road, dirt lakeside track, and short paved sections through Lorica itself. Much of the route runs under the shade of Calabrian black pine and silver-fir woodland that grows down to the water's edge, with regular open stretches offering broad views across the reservoir to Monte Botte Donato, the Sila's highest summit, on the far shore. Key landmarks include the Lorica lakefront promenade, the dam at the lake's eastern end, several wooden picnic clearings, and small inlets popular with anglers. Because the loop closes on itself at Lorica, there is no fixed turn-around point — walkers can shorten the outing by retracing their steps from the dam or any of the shoreline access points. Water and refreshments are available in Lorica before and after the walk; there are no reliable drinking-water sources on the trail itself, so carrying a supply is advised. Lorica also offers bars, restaurants, and seasonal accommodation, functioning as both trailhead and a base for the wider plateau. The waymarking follows clear lakeside signage and forestry tracks; navigation is straightforward in good visibility. The walk is hikeable across much of the year, though winter snow can blanket the plateau and make sections impassable without proper equipment. Entry to Sila National Park is free. The circuit pairs naturally with the ascent of Monte Botte Donato for a fuller day exploring the high Sila plateau.
