Foresta di Gallopane (Sila Ancient Pines)

The Foresta di Gallopane is an ancient pine forest on the eastern Sila plateau near Bocchigliero in Cosenza Province, Calabria, prized for its stands of towering old-growth Calabrian black pine (pino laricio). The walk is a gentle 6-kilometre circuit at around 1,150 metres, taking two to three hours, and is among the most family-friendly hikes in the Sila. A car is required to reach the forest — roughly 60 kilometres from Cosenza via the SS107 and connecting roads toward Bocchigliero — with informal parking at the forest entrance; no permit is needed within Sila National Park. The terrain is flat to gently rolling on soft forest floor, dirt tracks, and pine-needle paths, with abundant shade beneath the high canopy that keeps the route cool even in summer. The defining feature is the age and stature of the pines: some of the monumental trees here are centuries old, their tall straight trunks forming a cathedral-like woodland that has long supplied the prized timber of the Sila. Key landmarks along the loop include several of the largest veteran pines, open glades used for picnics, and quiet clearings where deer and other Sila wildlife are sometimes seen at dawn and dusk. Because the route is a closed circuit on level ground, walkers can turn back at any point without difficulty, and the gentle profile suits children, older walkers, and anyone wanting a restful forest immersion rather than a strenuous climb. There are no springs or refreshment points within the forest itself, so visitors should bring water and any snacks from Bocchigliero. A warm layer is sensible even in summer, as the shaded plateau air stays cool, and in winter snow transforms the forest into a magical but more demanding setting. The forest is hikeable year-round, with late spring through early autumn offering the easiest underfoot conditions. Entry to Sila National Park is free. The Foresta di Gallopane makes an excellent gentle counterpoint to the higher summits of the central Sila.
