Stilo and Monasterace Marina

Stilo is a stone hill town on the slopes of Monte Consolino in the Ionian hinterland of Calabria, celebrated for one of southern Italy's finest Byzantine monuments. It lies about 70 km north of Locri and 130 km from Reggio Calabria, roughly 1.5 hours by car via the A2 and SS111. Without a car, the Trenitalia line reaches Monasterace Marina on the coast (about 1 hour 30 minutes from Reggio, €7 ~$7.60), from where a taxi covers the 8 km up to Stilo for around €12 (~$13). The highlight is the Cattolica di Stilo, a small 10th-century Byzantine church with five terracotta-tiled domes, built of brick and clinging to the hillside above the town — a rare survivor of Calabria's Greek-Byzantine 'Bovesia' heritage, with faded frescoes inside. Stilo's medieval centre also holds the Duomo, the ruins of a Norman castle higher up the slope, and was the birthplace of the philosopher Tommaso Campanella. A practical one-day arc: drive up to Stilo in the morning, climb the steep lanes to the Cattolica while the air is cool, explore the old town, then descend for lunch — local trattorie serve frìttoli, hearty pasta and the Ionian's seafood and goat dishes. The afternoon pairs well with the coast at Monasterace Marina, where the Parco Archeologico dell'Antica Kaulon preserves the remains of the Greek colony of Kaulon, including a notable mosaic of a dragon, beside a quiet beach for a swim. April to October offers the most reliable weather; the steep climb to the Cattolica is hot at midsummer midday, so an earlier visit and good shoes are advisable. This is a moderate but deeply rewarding day blending Byzantine architecture, hill-town atmosphere and ancient Greek archaeology away from the main tourist routes.
