Le Castella and Capo Rizzuto from Crotone

Le Castella, on the Ionian coast of Calabria's Crotone province, is famed for its Aragonese castle that sits on a tiny islet linked to the shore by a slender strip of land, appearing to float on the turquoise sea. It lies about 25 km from Crotone, a 30-minute drive via the SS106 and SS107 bis; a car is effectively required, as there is no direct bus to Le Castella itself. The Castello Aragonese, with origins traced back to Greek and later medieval fortifications and largely rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries, can be toured for a small entry fee, with ramparts giving sweeping views along the coast. The surrounding waters form part of the Area Marina Protetta Capo Rizzuto, one of Italy's largest marine reserves, prized for clear water, seagrass meadows and snorkelling; glass-bottom boat trips run from the small harbour in summer. A natural one-day arc: arrive mid-morning to tour the castle before the midday heat, then spend the warm hours on the sandy beaches and in the shallow, sheltered swimming coves nearby. Lunch is best at a seafront trattoria in Le Castella village, where the catch of the day, sea urchins in season and local swordfish feature strongly. The afternoon suits a boat excursion over the marine reserve or a relaxed swim, with the castle especially photogenic in the golden light of late afternoon. June to September is the prime window for snorkelling and swimming, while May and October are good for visiting the castle in comfort with fewer crowds. Shade is limited around the islet, so sun protection and water are essential. This is a relaxed, easy day combining a striking monument, a protected marine environment and simple Ionian seafood, ideal for families and beach lovers based around Crotone.
