Sextantio Albergo Diffuso

Sextantio Albergo Diffuso occupies restored stone houses scattered through the medieval hilltop village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, inside the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park in the province of L'Aquila. The property is a pioneering example of an albergo diffuso, a hotel model in which guest rooms are dispersed among original village dwellings rather than concentrated in a single building, so arrival means walking narrow stone lanes past the medieval Torre Medicea to reach individual doors. Restoration by owner Daniele Kihlgren preserved original stone walls, wooden beams, and wrought-iron fittings, deliberately omitting televisions and, in most rooms, Wi-Fi, to keep the medieval atmosphere intact. Rooms range from simple stone doubles with exposed fireplaces to cave-style units carved partly into the hillside and larger tower suites with vaulted ceilings; furnishings use reclaimed local textiles and antique pieces sourced from the Abruzzo region. Breakfast and dinner are served in a candlelit vaulted dining room, drawing on local shepherd traditions with lentils, saffron from Navelli, and cured meats sourced from surrounding farms. There is no spa or pool, but the hotel arranges guided hikes into the national park and can organise saffron-harvest visits in season. Service is personal rather than corporate: a small on-site team handles check-in, meals, and excursion bookings, and staff double as informal guides to the village's history, including its near-abandonment before the restoration project began in the late 1990s.
