Opened as a county gaol in 1796, Kilmainham held ordinary criminals, political prisoners of the 1798 and 1803 rebellions, and Charles Stewart Parnell before becoming most infamous as the site where 14 leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising, including Patrick Pearse and James Connolly, were executed by firing squad in its Stonebreakers' Yard. Access is by guided tour only, and tours regularly sell out days in advance.
