The General Post Office opened on O'Connell Street in 1818 and became the rebel headquarters of the 1916 Easter Rising, when Patrick Pearse stood on its steps and read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. Shelled to a ruin by British artillery during Easter Week, it was rebuilt and reopened in 1929; its GPO Witness History exhibition inside the working post office uses the original building fabric, including columns still pitted with bullet marks.
