Despite its name, the Great Sugar Loaf is a hill rather than a true mountain, but its distinctive conical shape and exposed quartzite cap make the final approach feel more like scrambling than walking. The path climbs steadily through gorse and heather before the last 100 metres crosses loose scree to a narrow summit ridge with views stretching from Dublin Bay to the Wicklow uplands.
