Poolbeg Lighthouse

Poolbeg Lighthouse stands at the end of the Great South Wall, a stone causeway extending into Dublin Bay built in the 18th century to protect the shipping channel into Dublin port. The lighthouse's bright red exterior against the grey stone wall and open sea creates a strong graphic image, and the causeway itself, running dead straight for roughly 4 kilometers from the South Bull Wall car park, gives one of the longest continuous leading lines available for photography anywhere near Dublin city. Walking the full length of the wall to the lighthouse and back takes around two hours at a relaxed pace, with the surface exposed to wind and sea spray throughout, so waterproof footwear is worth having even on dry days. Dublin's skyline, the Poolbeg chimneys, and the Wicklow Mountains are all visible from various points along the walk, adding context beyond the lighthouse itself. Sunrise is the favored time for photographers, when the low sun lights the red lighthouse directly and the wall's stonework catches warm color, while the walk is popular with local runners and dog walkers throughout the day, meaning solitude is easiest to find early.
