Howth Cliff Walk

Howth is a fishing village and peninsula on Dublin's northern edge, reachable by DART train in about 30 minutes from the city center, and its cliff path loop trail is one of the most accessible stretches of dramatic coastline in Ireland without leaving the capital's commuter belt. The roughly 6-kilometer loop trail traces the cliff edge above the Irish Sea, passing gorse-covered headland, seabird nesting areas, and views out to Ireland's Eye and Lambay Island, with the Baily Lighthouse marking the peninsula's southeastern point. Walking the loop clockwise from Howth village climbs gradually to the cliff sections before descending back toward the harbor, and most walkers find this direction gives better views than the reverse route. The harbor itself, at the start and end of the walk, is lined with seafood restaurants and chip shops serving the day's catch, a popular way to finish the walk. The full loop takes two to three hours at a moderate pace. Wind picks up noticeably on the exposed cliff sections even on calm days in the city, so a windproof layer is worth carrying regardless of season. Weekday mornings are quietest on the trail, while weekend afternoons draw the heaviest local footfall given the walk's popularity with Dubliners.
