Newgrange

Newgrange in County Meath is a passage tomb built around 3200 BC, predating Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids, and forms the centerpiece of the Brú na Bóinne UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside the nearby mounds of Knowth and Dowth. Access is only via a shuttle bus from the visitor center, where exhibits explain the tomb's construction and the elaborate spiral and lozenge carvings found on its kerbstones, including the famous entrance stone. Inside, a narrow 19-meter passage leads to a cruciform burial chamber with a corbelled roof that has stayed watertight for five millennia, and guides demonstrate the tomb's most famous feature, a roof-box above the entrance that aligns precisely with the rising sun at the winter solstice, flooding the chamber with light for about 17 minutes. A visit including the shuttle, guided tour, and visitor center exhibits takes two to three hours. The solstice illumination itself is viewed live by only a small number of visitors chosen annually by public lottery, though the visitor center recreates the effect with artificial light on every tour. Summer months bring the largest crowds and require advance booking, while the neighboring Knowth mound, with its own concentration of megalithic art, is often paired with a Newgrange visit for a fuller sense of the Brú na Bóinne complex.
