Kilmainham Gaol

Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin held prisoners from 1796 to 1924 and is inseparable from the story of Irish independence, since leaders of the 1798, 1803, 1867, and 1916 uprisings were all imprisoned within its walls, and the 1916 Easter Rising leaders were executed in its Stonebreakers' Yard. Access is by guided tour only, and the group moves through the older wings with small cramped cells built for the general prison population, then into the East Wing, a Victorian addition with a dramatic vaulted, naturally lit atrium that appears in films for its stark architecture. The tour ends at Stonebreakers' Yard, where a black cross marks the execution site of the Rising's leaders, and the museum afterward displays personal artifacts, letters, and exhibits on the prison's social history, including its use to hold debtors and children as well as political prisoners. Tours run about 70 minutes and the full visit with the museum takes 1.5 hours. The subject matter is heavy, covering executions and harsh Victorian-era conditions, so it may not suit very young children. Tickets sell out weeks ahead, particularly around Easter when the site draws crowds connected to the Rising's anniversary. The neighboring Irish Museum of Modern Art shares the same grounds and pairs well with a visit here.
