Killarney National Park

Killarney National Park in County Kerry was Ireland's first national park, established in 1932 around a donated Muckross Estate, and covers 26,000 acres of mountain, moorland, oak and yew woodland, and the three interconnected Lakes of Killarney. The centerpiece for most visitors is Muckross House, a 19th-century Victorian mansion with formal gardens open for separate admission, reached on foot, by bike, or by traditional horse-drawn jaunting car from Killarney town. Trails fan out from Muckross toward Torc Waterfall, a 20-meter cascade a short walk from the road, and further into the park toward Ross Castle on the lake shore, where seasonal boat trips run out onto Lough Leane. Cyclists can cover much of the park's flat lakeside network in a half day, while hikers heading toward the Gap of Dunloe or the higher trails need a full day. A half to full day is typical depending on how much of the park is covered, with Muckross House and Torc Waterfall as the minimum stops for a shorter visit. Red deer, Ireland's only native deer herd, roam the park and are most visible at dawn and dusk, particularly during the autumn rutting season. Summer weekends bring heavy footfall around Muckross House and the jaunting car stands, while the wider trail network stays quiet even in peak season.
