Glendalough

Glendalough sits in a glacier-carved valley in the Wicklow Mountains, where St. Kevin founded a monastic settlement in the 6th century that grew into one of Ireland's most important centers of learning before its eventual decline. The surviving ruins cluster around the Lower Lake and include a well-preserved round tower over 30 meters tall, a roofless cathedral, and St. Kevin's Kitchen, a small stone-roofed church with a distinctive round bell tower, along with a graveyard of weathered Celtic crosses. Trails continue past the Lower Lake to the wilder Upper Lake, framed by steep valley walls, and connect into the wider Wicklow Way long-distance walking trail for those wanting a longer hike into the mountains. A visit to the monastic site and Lower Lake takes about two hours; extending to the Upper Lake and surrounding trails turns it into a half-day or longer outing. The Lower Lake area, closest to the car park and visitor center, draws the bulk of tour bus visitors, while the Upper Lake stays noticeably quieter even at busy times. Early arrival before the first coaches, typically before 10am, gives the most peaceful experience of the monastic ruins.
