Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge links the County Antrim mainland to the small island of Carrickarede across a 20-meter chasm, suspended around 30 meters above the Atlantic. Salmon fishermen originally strung a rope bridge here to reach fishing nets on the island, and the current, sturdier version now carries visitors across for the views rather than the fishery, which closed decades ago. Reaching the bridge involves a roughly one-kilometer walk from the car park along a scenic coastal path with views back toward Rathlin Island and, on clear days, across to Scotland. Crossing itself takes only a minute or two, but the payoff is the island side, where a short path leads to further clifftop views before crossing back. A full visit, including the walk in and out and time on the island, takes 1.5 to 2 hours. The bridge sways underfoot and has no barrier beyond its rope handrails, so it is not recommended for those with a strong fear of heights. Timed tickets are required and sell out during summer, when demand can exceed the bridge's limited crossing capacity per hour. The site sits about 15 kilometers from the Giant's Causeway, making the two an easy pairing along the Causeway Coastal Route.
