Ballintoy Harbor

Ballintoy Harbour is a small working harbor on the County Antrim coast, tucked below the village of the same name and reached by a steep road down from the clifftop car park. White limestone outcrops and rock formations frame the tiny harbor basin, and on calm days the water sits a striking turquoise over the pale rock and sand below, an effect that made the location a natural fit for filming as the Iron Islands in Game of Thrones. The harbor remains in occasional use by local fishermen, with lobster pots and small boats adding working detail to photographs alongside the natural rock formations. Rock pools along the shoreline are worth exploring at low tide, when more of the limestone platform is exposed. A visit to walk around the harbor and shoreline takes about an hour. Morning light works best here, both for softer shadows on the pale rock and because low tide in the morning during summer months often exposes more of the rock pools for photography. The steep road down to the harbor and the surrounding rocks can be slippery when wet, so careful footing matters in this exposed coastal spot.
