Kolkata Nightlife Guide 2026

The night-time map of Kolkata: where locals drink, where the music is, and what it costs.

Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal and the former capital of British India, a river city on the Hooghly known for Victorian architecture, Durga Puja, literature and film, hand-pulled rickshaws and trams, and a street-food and sweets culture that is among the best in India.

Kolkata's nightlife is compact and sociable rather than clubby. Park Street, the old Anglo-Indian entertainment strip, still anchors the scene with pubs such as Olypub, Trincas and Someplace Else, while hotel bars and a growing set of cocktail rooms spread across Esplanade, Camac Street, Salt Lake and New Town. Live music, adda culture and festival evenings (Durga Puja especially) matter as much as clubs.

A typical evening starts with dinner on Park Street, moves to a live-music pub, and ends by midnight. A younger crowd uses newer cocktail bars away from Park Street. Venue lists change often; a November 2025 report names Broadway, Chung Wah, Olypub and Someplace Else as continuing stalwarts, so confirm any bar's current status before going.

At a glance

Peak hours
Pubs fill from about 7PM and peak between 8PM and 11PM, with live bands usually starting around 8PM-9PM. Friday and Saturday are the busiest nights; most venues wind down around midnight.
Average drink
Beer at pubs costs approx ₹300-600 (approx $3.10-6.25 USD); cocktails at Park Street and hotel bars approx ₹450-1,200 (approx $4.70-12.50 USD); hotel-bar spirits approx ₹600-1,200 per peg (approx $6.25-12.50 USD). Bottled water is approx ₹20-40 (approx $0.21-0.42 USD).
Dress code
Smart casual is accepted in almost all bars; hotel venues and nightclubs such as Roxy may refuse shorts, flip-flops and sportswear. Modest clothing is wise when travelling to and from venues late at night.
Cover charge
West Bengal's liquor rules are set by state excise law: dry days apply on notified dates, drinking in public places is an offence, and the legal drinking age is variously cited as 21 or 25. Entries in this file draw on published guides and listings of varying date, so confirm hours, cover and licences directly with each venue before going.

Nightlife tips

Stay safe and have fun.

Tip

The legal drinking age in West Bengal is cited as 25 by some legal sources and 21 by others; venues check ID, so carry a passport copy.

Tip

Dry days (Republic Day, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti and election days) close liquor sales; some reports say star hotels are exempt, but a 2026 election dry spell hit hotel bars too.

Tip

Park Street is the easiest area for a first night; Kolkata Metro trains stop running at roughly 10PM, so plan a ride-hail cab home.

Tip

Ride-hail apps (Uber, Ola, Rapido) work late; solo visitors should use app cabs rather than street hails after midnight.

Tip

Most pubs wind down around midnight; confirm closing time and last orders with the venue.

Tip

Weekday evenings are quiet; Friday and Saturday are busiest.

Tip

Live-music venues may charge a cover or minimum spend; ask at the door.

Tip

Carry cash for old bars such as Broadway Bar and Olypub; cards are accepted in hotel bars.

Tip

Spirits are often priced per peg, with 30 ml or 60 ml pours; check the measure on the menu.

Tip

During Durga Puja, bars may be crowded earlier and close for specific nights; confirm before going.
