Colonial-era painting, manuscripts and Kolkata gallery.
Victoria Memorial Hall is the white-marble memorial museum on Queen's Way at the southern end of the Maidan in Kolkata, West Bengal. Conceived by Viceroy Lord Curzon after Queen Victoria's death in 1901, it was designed by William Emerson in an Indo-Saracenic style and opened to the public in 1921 after construction that began in 1906. As a museum, it focuses on the colonial era, with an emphasis on painting, manuscripts and the history of Kolkata. The Central Hall under the dome holds a marble statue of Queen Victoria, and the surrounding galleries include the Royal Gallery and the Portrait Gallery. The Calcutta Gallery uses maps, prints and models to follow the growth of the city from the 17th century, and the National Leaders Gallery covers the freedom movement. The painting collection features works by European artists who travelled to India, including Thomas and William Daniell, Johann Zoffany and Tilly Kettle, and the museum's holdings of manuscripts include illuminated Persian works and rare printed books. The museum arranges its displays by theme and chronology, mixing portraits, documents and objects. The building was conserved in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and its gardens, which cover about 64 acres, were restored with new paths and ponds. The memorial is a protected monument managed by an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture. It remains one of the most visited sites in Kolkata and a symbol of the city.
