The Victoria Memorial Hall Museum occupies the white-marble memorial at 1 Queen's Way on the southern edge of the Maidan in Kolkata, West Bengal. Viceroy Lord Curzon proposed the memorial after Queen Victoria's death in 1901, and the foundation stone was laid in 1906 by the Prince of Wales. Designed by William Emerson in an Indo-Saracenic revival style mixing Renaissance, Mughal and Venetian elements, the building opened to the public in 1921. Its dome is crowned by a bronze Angel of Victory, and the structure is faced in Makrana marble from Rajasthan. The collection is organised in galleries that tell Kolkata's story from the 17th century through the colonial period and the freedom movement. The Royal Gallery and National Leaders Gallery present portraits and objects linked to the Raj and Indian political figures, while the Calcutta Gallery traces the growth of the city from Job Charnock's settlement. The Portrait Gallery, the Sculpture Gallery and a gallery of Thomas and William Daniell's aquatints show how artists recorded India. Other holdings include rare books, manuscripts, arms, coins and a notable group of paintings by European artists. A Sound and Light show in the evening narrates the history of Calcutta in the gardens. The museum follows a mixed curatorial approach, combining chronological galleries with thematic displays. The building has been conserved periodically, and the surrounding gardens, laid out under Lord Curzon's direction, remain a landscaped public park. The hall is managed by an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture of the Government of India and remains one of Kolkata's most visited landmarks.
