Flamingo Boat Safari on Thane Creek at Airoli

The flamingo boat safari runs from the Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Centre on Diva Nagar Road in Airoli, Navi Mumbai, at the edge of the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary, one of the largest urban flamingo congregation sites in India. Run by the Maharashtra Forest Department's Mangrove Cell, the safari takes small groups by boat through the mangrove-lined channels of Thane Creek to view lesser and greater flamingos feeding in the shallow mudflats, alongside other wading birds such as herons, egrets and sandpipers. The activity requires no fitness or prior boating experience: visitors sit in a covered or open motorboat for around an hour while a forest department boatman navigates the marked channels, making it suitable for children, older travellers and casual visitors, though very young children should be supervised closely on the open deck. Life jackets are provided and required to be worn for the duration of the ride. The Mangrove Cell is a government-run operation rather than a private tour company, and boats are operated by trained forest department staff familiar with the tidal channels and flamingo feeding patterns; safety briefings before departure cover staying seated, keeping noise low to avoid disturbing the birds, and the location of life jackets. Because the safari operates within a protected sanctuary on a working tidal creek, timings are tied to tide levels and can be adjusted or cancelled at short notice, so it is worth calling ahead or checking on arrival. The Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Centre also has an interpretation area covering the mangrove ecosystem and the creek's bird life, worth combining with the boat ride. The best season runs from November to May, when migratory flamingos are present on the creek in large numbers, with the peak from February to April; the sanctuary is far quieter, and boat rides sometimes suspended, during the June-to-October monsoon.
