St. Mary's Basilica stands in Shivajinagar, in central Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, and is regarded as the oldest church in the city. Its origins go back to 1818, when a small shrine was built on the site by the French missionary Abbe Dubois for the Tamil Catholic community of the area. The present Gothic-revival church was raised in 1875 to replace it, and in 1974 it was elevated to the status of a minor basilica by the Vatican, one of the few churches in India to hold that rank. The building is an impressive example of Indo-Gothic design, with twin spires, pointed arches, buttresses and a long nave lit by stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the life of Mary and other Christian imagery. The facade is finished in a warm stone-like plaster, and the interior features a carved altar and statues. The church is the centre of the Feast of St. Mary's Nativity, celebrated each year around 8 September, when the surrounding streets fill with pilgrims, flower sellers and market stalls, and the festival draws visitors of many faiths. There is no museum or curated exhibition; the basilica operates as an active place of worship with daily masses, and the historical interest lies in the building itself and the traditions around it. Repairs and restoration have been carried out by the parish, including work on the spires and the interior, and the church remains in good condition, though its market setting is busy. Visitors should dress modestly, keep quiet during services and avoid photography during Mass. Commercial Street and the Cantonment area are close by, and Holy Trinity Church on Halasuru Road makes a natural pairing.
