The difficulty with famous attractions is rarely finding them; it is deciding which ones justify the time they consume. A useful filter is to ask what a place explains. Sites that make a city's history, geography or industry legible tend to repay a long visit, while those that are simply well known can often be seen in passing. Two or three substantial visits in a day is a realistic ceiling for most travellers.

Practicalities vary more than they appear to. Opening patterns follow local conventions: a weekly closing day, long lunch closures, seasonal hours that shrink sharply out of season, and religious sites that close to visitors during services. Timed-entry ticketing has spread well beyond the headline landmarks, and where it applies, tickets are frequently released on a fixed schedule and taken quickly. Check whether a city pass covers the sites you actually intend to see rather than assuming breadth equals value.

The common failures are avoidable: arriving on the one day of the week a site is shut, queuing for a ticket that could only be bought online, or booking the first slot of the day at a place that is quietest in the last hour. Where a site is being restored, scaffolding and closed wings are worth checking for before travelling, since major works often run for years rather than weeks.
