South Aegean Weather & Climate Guide 2025
Plan your trip with detailed weather information and seasonal tips for South Aegean.
South Aegean is Greece's island paradise, encompassing the stunning Cyclades and Dodecanese archipelagos in the heart of the Mediterranean. From the iconic whitewashed clifftop villages of Santorini and the glamorous shores of Mykonos to the medieval walled city of Rhodes and the archaeological wonders of Delos, this region offers an unparalleled blend of ancient history, natural beauty, and vibrant island culture.
Best Time to Visit
Best Months
May, June, September, October
Warm, sunny weather (22-28°C) with clear Aegean seas, fewer crowds than peak summer, lower prices, and most attractions fully open. September is particularly perfect — sea temperatures reach their warmest and the harsh summer heat has subsided.
Months to Avoid
November to March for beach and island activities
Many hotels, restaurants, and ferry services on smaller islands close entirely from November to March. Weather is mild but can be rainy and windy. The sea is too cold for swimming.
Climate Overview
The South Aegean enjoys a classic Mediterranean climate characterized by long, hot, dry summers (June-September) and mild, wet winters (November-March). The meltemi — a strong northerly wind — blows persistently in July and August, cooling the intense summer heat but sometimes disrupting ferry schedules. Annual rainfall is low (300-400mm, mostly October-March). The Dodecanese islands in the southeast are slightly warmer and drier than the Cyclades.

Seasonal Breakdown
Detailed information for each season.
🌸 Spring
Mar-May
Spring arrives early in the South Aegean, with wildflowers carpeting the hillsides from March and temperatures climbing steadily. April and May are ideal for sightseeing and hiking before the summer heat. The sea is still cool (17-19°C) for swimming but beaches are uncrowded.
☀️ Summer
Jun-Sep
The long Aegean summer brings blazing sunshine, sea temperatures of 24-27°C, and the full carnival of island tourism. July and August are extreme — temperatures exceed 35°C and Santorini and Mykonos are overwhelmed with visitors. The meltemi wind provides some relief but can be very strong. September is many visitors' favorite month.
🍂 Fall
Oct-Nov
October is still pleasant with temperatures of 20-24°C and a warm sea. The tourist season winds down, locals reclaim their islands, and authentic experiences become easier to find. November brings cooling temperatures and the first autumn rains. Many businesses begin closing for winter.
❄️ Winter
Dec-Feb
South Aegean winters are mild compared to northern Europe (10-16°C) but many smaller islands become very quiet with most tourist-oriented businesses closed. Rhodes and Kos remain the most active year-round, with a domestic Greek tourism scene. The sea is cold (15-16°C) and unsuitable for swimming.
