Kafeneion To Pervolaki occupies the main square of Folegandros Chora, the beautiful clifftop capital of one of the Cyclades' most unspoiled and least-visited islands. The word kafeneion — a traditional Greek café-taverna — describes a particular kind of establishment that has been disappearing across the popular islands: a simple room or shaded terrace where locals gather to drink coffee, read newspapers, play backgammon, and consume modest food over many hours. To Pervolaki is one of the finest surviving examples in the South Aegean, and visiting it is a form of cultural immersion as much as a meal. House wine comes from barrels and is poured into ceramic carafes at prices that recall a previous generation of Cycladic travel; mezedes plates arrive without ceremony — olives, a dip, some bread, perhaps fried courgette; the matses pasta with lobster, when available, is a Folegandrian specialty using the island's distinctive handmade pasta. The square on which the kafeneion sits is itself one of the most photogenic in the Cyclades, with three interconnected plazas shaded by mulberry and pepper trees. The kafeneion is open from early morning for coffee through late evening for wine and mezedes, functioning as the social hub of the Chora across the entire day. Children run between tables while older residents play cards — the atmosphere is entirely genuine.
