The Menalon Trail is the Peloponnese's premier long-distance hiking route, tracing 75 kilometres through the remote Arcadian highlands of central Greece. The trail divides into eight independently walkable sections, each connecting stone-built villages, Byzantine monasteries, and forested gorges that defined medieval Arcadia. Parking is available in Vitina's central square.

The Peloponnese's signature long-distance trail through the Arcadian highlands, connecting stone-built mountain villages, Byzantine monasteries, and forested gorges. Each of the 8 sections is independently walkable.

The official trailhead for the full route begins at Vitina village (Arcadia 220 10), accessible by car from Tripoli (about 35 km southeast) or by KTEL bus from Athens. Total distance spans 75 km with cumulative elevation gain varying between 800 m and 1,650 m depending on which sections are combined. The terrain shifts from packed-earth forest tracks and cobblestone kalderimi paths to exposed limestone ridges and river-level routes beside the Lousios River. The most technically demanding sections pass through the Lousios Gorge and the upper ridges near Magouliana, where narrow cliff-edge paths require careful footing. Shade is plentiful in the lower gorge sections but absent on the high ridges above Stemnitsa.

Key landmarks along the route include the Monastery of Prodromos (Section 3), perched dramatically on a cliff face inside the Lousios Gorge; the Dimitsana Water Power Museum, documenting the region's hydro-industrial heritage; the silver-smithing village of Stemnitsa; and several Byzantine-era stone bridges over the Lousios and Alphios rivers. Each village along the route has at least one kafeneio and small taverna; accommodation in traditional guesthouses (xenones) is available in Vitina, Stemnitsa, Dimitsana, Elati, and Magouliana. Water is available at village fountains along each section; stream water in the gorge is generally present but should be treated before drinking.

There are no mountain refuge huts on the Menalon Trail, but villages on each section mean shelter is never more than a few hours away. Waymarking is consistent throughout with red-and-white E4 markers and dedicated Menalon Trail signage at major junctions. The trail was developed with European Union funding and is maintained by the local municipalities of Arcadia.

Highlights

  • Lousios Gorge section (Section 3)
  • Dimitsana village and Water Power Museum
  • Prodromos Monastery cliff face
  • Stemnitsa silversmith village

Tips for visiting

  • Waterproof trail shoes or light hiking boots are sufficient for most sections; the lower gorge path suits trail running shoes in dry conditions.
  • April to June and September to November are the ideal windows; July and August bring heat above 30°C and frequent afternoon thunderstorms above 1,000 m.
  • Carry 1.5–2 litres of water for each section; village fountains are reliable but stream water should be purified before drinking.
  • KTEL bus connects Athens (Kifissos terminal) to Vitina and Dimitsana — useful for point-to-point section logistics without a hire car.
  • Section 3 through the Lousios Gorge is the most popular; start before 9 AM in spring to have the gorge path largely to yourself.

When to visit

April to early June and mid-September to November offer the most comfortable conditions — wildflowers in spring, golden foliage in autumn, and moderate temperatures throughout. Avoid July and August when heat above 30°C and afternoon thunderstorms are common on the upper sections.

Accessibility

No section of the Menalon Trail is wheelchair- or stroller-accessible. The terrain throughout consists of steep cobblestone kalderimi paths, forest tracks, and cliff-edge routes that require surefootedness and agility.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Menalon Trail sections be walked independently?

Yes — each of the 8 sections starts and ends in a village with road access, making it straightforward to walk one or two sections on a day trip from Tripoli or Nafplio without committing to the full multi-day route.

Is the Menalon Trail open year-round?

Most sections are passable year-round, but deep winter snow can close the higher village tracks above 1,100 m from December to March. Spring and autumn are the most reliable seasons.

Is the trail well-marked?

Waymarking is generally good throughout, with red-and-white E4 blazes and dedicated Menalon Trail signage at major junctions. A paper map or downloaded GPX track is still recommended for the longer sections.

Are there places to eat along the trail?

Most villages on the route have at least one taverna or kafeneio. Stemnitsa, Dimitsana, and Vitina offer the widest choice; more remote sections require carrying lunch.
