Lousios Gorge Trail — Elati to Dimitsana

The Lousios Gorge Trail is widely regarded as the finest single-day walk in the Peloponnese, descending into a 300-metre-deep river canyon carved by the Lousios River through the Arcadian highlands of central Greece. The standard one-way route covers 14 kilometres from the ruins of Ancient Gortys near Elati village to the town of Dimitsana, with approximately 700 m of total elevation change — combining a descent into the gorge and a climb out to the rim at Dimitsana. The trailhead at Ancient Gortys is reached by car via the regional road between Elati and Karytaina; parking is available at the archaeological site. No permit is required.

The trail surface alternates between narrow dirt paths cut into cliff faces, flat river-level tracks, and stone-paved kalderimi routes on the ascent to Dimitsana. Exposure is significant on the cliff-edge sections near Prodromos Monastery, where paths are barely half a metre wide above the river far below. Shade is good in the lower gorge throughout the day; the open upper section approaching Dimitsana is exposed in the afternoon.

Key landmarks along the route include the Monastery of Prodromos, built directly into the cliff face and accessible via a steep branching path from the main trail. The older Monastery of Philosophou — notable for a hidden Ottoman mosque constructed within the existing church — lies on the opposite bank of the Lousios. The ruins of Ancient Gortys at the southern trailhead include a well-preserved Asclepion healing sanctuary. In summer, deep pools beneath the gorge walls offer swimming in clear water. Dimitsana at the northern end has tavernas, guesthouses, and the Dimitsana Water Power Museum.

Water is available from the Lousios River (treat before drinking) and at monastery tap-points along the way. No official refuge huts exist on this section. Most hikers arrange a car shuttle between Ancient Gortys and Dimitsana, as the route is one-directional and public transport between the two points is limited.
