Guesthouse Monodendri

Guesthouse Monodendri sits in the village of Monodendri, at the southern edge of the Zagori region approximately 35 kilometres north of Ioannina. The village is the traditional southern entry point to the Vikos Gorge, and the footpath from the edge of the village — passing the 16th-century Monastery of Agia Paraskevi, perched at the gorge rim — descends directly into the canyon floor, making this guesthouse one of the few accommodations in Zagori that places guests literally steps from a major trailhead.

The guesthouse occupies a stone building consistent with Zagorian village architecture: thick limestone walls, a slate roof, and small windows that retain heat through cold mountain winters. Double and triple rooms are simply furnished with local textiles and solid wooden furniture. Both room types face either toward the gorge rim or the village square, and the terrace commands clear views along the upper canyon and across to the forested slopes of the opposite gorge wall.

Breakfast is included in all room rates and served in a communal dining area with a fireplace. Typical fare includes bread, local honey, regional cheese from Zagori producers, and seasonal preserves. The guesthouse does not serve dinner, but a small taverna in the village is within easy walking distance. Packed lunches can be arranged for guests departing early on the gorge walk.

The gorge lookout point at the edge of Monodendri is one of the most photographed viewpoints in mainland Greece and is a few minutes' walk from the guesthouse entrance. Wi-Fi is available. The property suits independent hikers, trekkers tackling the multi-day Zagori route between Monodendri and Papingo, and travellers looking for an affordable stone-village base with direct Vikos Gorge access.

Tips for visiting

  • Start the Vikos Gorge descent early — by mid-morning in summer the sun reaches the gorge floor and temperatures rise sharply. A 6–7 am start is ideal.
  • The gorge floor walk from Monodendri to Papingo is approximately 12–14 kilometres and takes 5–7 hours; arrange accommodation in Papingo before setting out.
  • Monodendri has no ATM — bring cash from Ioannina, as card acceptance is unreliable in the village.
