The Church of the Acheiropoietos at Agiou Dimitriou 56 in Thessaloniki, Greece, is one of the oldest surviving churches in the city and a UNESCO-listed Early Christian and Byzantine monument. Built in the mid-5th century as a three-aisled basilica, its name means 'not made by human hands', referring to a miraculous icon of the Virgin once kept there. Later history gave the building a role as a mosque under Ottoman rule, after which it returned to Christian use.

Inside, visitors find rows of marble columns with carved capitals, a timber-roofed nave and galleries above the side aisles, which give the interior its long, airy proportions. Surviving 5th- and 6th-century mosaic fragments of floral and geometric patterns decorate the arches above the columns, and traces of later wall painting remain. The church is free to enter and still used for worship, so visits are best timed outside services; a stop of 20 to 30 minutes covers the nave, the galleries and the mosaics. Mornings, before services, are the quietest, and the church sees far fewer tour groups than the nearby Agios Dimitrios. It sits close to Agias Sofias on Metro Line 1, about four minutes on foot, and forms a natural link in a walk along Agiou Dimitriou between Hagia Sophia and the larger church of Saint Demetrius. Visitors should dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees, keep voices low and avoid flash photography. The pavement outside is shaded by buildings, and a handful of cafes are nearby for a break after the visit.
