Thessaloniki is the capital of Central Macedonia and the second-largest city in Greece, a port on the Thermaic Gulf with more than 2,300 years of history. Roman and early Christian monuments inscribed by UNESCO, a Byzantine hilltop quarter, a seafront promenade anchored by the White Tower and some of the best food markets and mezedes tavernas in the country sit within walking distance of each other.
Thessaloniki is one of Greece's liveliest student cities. Bars cluster in Ladadika (restored warehouses by the port), Valaoritou (cocktail bars and DJ rooms), around Bit Bazaar (tavernas with rebetiko) and along the Nikis waterfront. Dinner starts after 21:00, bars fill after midnight and clubs peak around 02:00.
Early evening is for meze and wine in Ladadika; after 23:00 the crowd moves to the cocktail bars of Valaoritou and the rock clubs near Pindou. Large bouzoukia clubs with live Greek music operate on the outskirts in winter and move to the seaside in summer.
