Anafiotika Neighborhood

Anafiotika is a small neighbourhood on the northeastern slope of the Acropolis, within the Plaka district of central Athens. Its whitewashed houses, blue shutters, flowering pots and narrow stepped lanes resemble a Cycladic island village, an unexpected sight in the middle of the Greek capital.

Tiny Cycladic village beneath the Acropolis in central Athens. Whitewashed houses with blue shutters, narrow passages, and cats sleeping on steps. Built by workers from Anafi island in the 1860s, it feels like you've been transported to an island while still in the capital.

The area was built in the 1860s by stonemasons and builders from the island of Anafi, who came to work on the palace of King Otto and the city's new buildings, and who recreated their island architecture on the rock. The neighbourhood is only a handful of lanes and takes about thirty to forty-five minutes to explore, though many visitors linger longer. The houses are small, often with a single room, a roof terrace and a courtyard filled with bougainvillea, jasmine and geraniums. Cats sleep on steps and walls, and the quiet contrasts with the busy tavernas of Plaka below. Because the settlement was built quickly and, according to local tradition, with little regard for formal permissions, the layout is irregular, with winding paths, small squares and tiny churches. The Church of Agios Georgios of the Rock and the Church of Agios Simeon are among the chapels in the area. Visitors usually enter from the Plaka side, near the Church of Agios Nikolaos Rangavas, and climb uphill along steps from Prytaneiou Street. The route continues up to the foot of the Acropolis rock, where views extend over Athens. Since the area is residential, visitors are asked to keep voices low, avoid entering private courtyards, and not block doorways while photographing. The neighbourhood is quietest early in the morning and in the late evening, and busiest in mid-day, when tours pass through. Early light creates a soft look on the white walls. Summer afternoons are hot and the stone steps can be slippery, so comfortable shoes help. Many visitors pair a walk here with the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, and a meal in Plaka. There is no admission charge, and the neighbourhood is open at all times as part of the public streets of Athens, Greece.
