The hottest period in Attica with temperatures regularly reaching 35-40°C, intense humidity, maximum crowds at sites, highest accommodation prices, and a real heat stress risk during outdoor sightseeing.

Climate Overview

Attica has a classic Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, moderately rainy winters. Athens enjoys nearly 2,800 hours of sunshine annually, making it one of Europe's sunniest capitals. Summer months (June-September) are virtually rainless, while winter brings occasional rainstorms and rare cold snaps from the north.

Coldest month. Cool, occasionally rainy. Mountains may have snow. Lowest tourist numbers and prices. Epiphany (Jan 6) celebrated with blessing of the waters at Piraeus.

Feb

Still cool with rain likely. Apokries (carnival) festivities begin. Almond trees bloom in late February. Quietest period for tourism.

Mar

Spring begins. Increasingly warm and sunny days mixed with cooler rainy spells. Wildflowers starting on lower mountain slopes. Greek Independence Day (25 March) parade in Athens.

Apr

Lovely spring weather, wildflowers everywhere. Perfect for sightseeing. Easter typically falls in April bringing festive atmosphere. Parnitha and Hymettus are green and vibrant.

May

Warm, sunny, and beautiful. One of the best months to visit — conditions ideal for everything. Beaches beginning to warm up. Tourist numbers building but not yet peak.

Jun

Hot and sunny. Long days with 14+ hours of daylight. Sea temperature reaches swimming comfort (~22°C). Crowds growing at major sites. Athens Epidaurus Festival of theatre and music begins.

Jul

Very hot with almost no rain. Meltemi winds bring cooling breezes. Beaches and island day trips at their best. Intense crowds at Acropolis and major sites. Book everything in advance.

Aug

Hottest month, can reach 40°C. Many Athenians leave for islands — some local restaurants and businesses close. Sea at 25-26°C. Peak tourist season. Assumption of Mary (15 Aug) is a national holiday.

Sep

25°C/77°F avg (20°C min, 30°C max)
Excellent month — warm, sunny, with crowds and prices easing after peak. Sea still warm for swimming (24°C). Often considered the best month for combining sightseeing and beach.

Oct

19°C/66°F avg (14°C min, 24°C max)
Comfortable temperatures, autumn light perfect for photography, occasional rain. Sea cooling but still swimmable early in the month. Oxi Day (28 Oct) national holiday with parade.

Nov

14°C/57°F avg (10°C min, 18°C max)
Cooling significantly with more frequent rain. Mountains getting colder. Low tourist season begins. Good for museums and indoor culture. Some Athens Riviera restaurants close.

Dec

Cool and occasionally rainy. Athens Christmas decorations and events are charming. Syntagma Square has a Christmas tree and market. Low tourist numbers mean easy site access.

🌸 Spring

Mar-May

Spring arrives gradually with warming temperatures, blossoming flowers, and green mountains. By April and May conditions are ideal for sightseeing and hiking. Light rains can occur in March. Wildflowers carpet Parnitha and Hymettus in April.

Tips: Pack light layers for variable temperatures. Perfect for hiking and all outdoor activities. Book Easter period well in advance as it's a major national holiday.

Jun-Aug

Hot, dry, and sunny with cloudless skies and sea temperatures perfect for swimming. Peak tourist season with maximum crowds at sites and beaches. Meltemi winds from the north bring some relief in July-August, making the Saronic coast breezier.

Tips: Visit major sites before 10AM or after 4PM. Always carry water. Book accommodation and site tickets months in advance. Beaches and island day trips are at their best.

🍂 Fall

Sep-Nov

September is golden — still warm enough for swimming (sea at 24°C), fewer crowds, and lower prices. October cools pleasantly with occasional rain returning. November marks the end of beach season and sees more frequent rain.

Tips: September-October is arguably the best month to visit Athens. Wear layers in October and November. Hiking on mountain trails is excellent through October.

Dec-Feb

Mild by northern European standards but genuinely cool and occasionally rainy. Mountains may see snow (Parnitha typically has skiable snow in January-February). Athens city life continues normally; museums and sites are uncrowded.

Tips: Pack a warm jacket and waterproof layer. Take advantage of free museum Sundays (Nov-Mar). Athens Christmas and Epiphany celebrations are charming. Ski resorts on Parnitha open if snow conditions allow.
