  • CategoryLuxury
  • Rating★ 4.6

New Hotel Athens occupies a former Olympic Airways office building on Filellinon Street, two blocks south of Syntagma Square in central Athens. The building was transformed by Brazilian designers Fernando and Humberto Campana — the Campana Brothers — whose intervention turned the interiors into an exercise in creative material reuse. Salvaged furniture fragments, repurposed wooden elements, and hand-crafted fixtures are integrated throughout the lobby, corridors, and guestrooms, making the hotel as much an art installation as an accommodation.

The 79 rooms and suites are divided into Superior, Deluxe, and Junior Suite categories, each with bespoke Campana-designed furnishings. Despite the experimental aesthetic, rooms include all expected amenities: high-speed Wi-Fi, climate control, premium bedding, and well-designed bathrooms. Upper-floor rooms look out toward the Acropolis or across the Athens roofscape.

The ground-floor restaurant, Social Resto Bar, serves modern Mediterranean food throughout the day and transitions to a cocktail bar atmosphere in the evening. The rooftop bar opens seasonally and draws a design-conscious Athens crowd alongside hotel guests. There is no spa or pool on site, making the hotel best suited to guests who prioritise location and design over resort-style leisure.

Filellinon Street connects directly to Syntagma Square at its northern end and to Plaka at its southern end, placing the hotel within five minutes of the Metro, the National Gardens, and the main pedestrian route toward the Acropolis. The Acropolis Museum is a 12-minute walk. The property is operated under the YES! Hotels group.

Tips for visiting

  • Request an upper-floor room facing south or west for the best Acropolis and city views.
  • The rooftop bar is popular with Athens design-scene locals; it fills quickly after 9 p.m. on weekends.
  • Filellinon Street is partly pedestrianised and easy to walk; arriving by Metro at Syntagma (2-minute walk) is more convenient than a taxi in peak traffic.
  • The hotel suits guests with a preference for design and culture over pool and spa facilities — those wanting resort amenities should look at Electra Palace or Grande Bretagne instead.
