King George, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Athens

The King George occupies a corner of Syntagma Square directly facing the Greek Parliament, in a building dating to 1915 that has hosted heads of state, royalty and celebrities for over a century. It belongs to Marriott's Luxury Collection and sits under the same ownership group, Lampsa Hellenic Hotels, as its neighbor the Hotel Grande Bretagne, giving the two properties a shared institutional pedigree even though they operate as distinct hotels with different personalities. The King George leans into a more intimate, art-filled interior of dark wood paneling, crystal chandeliers and a private collection of 20th-century artwork.

The hotel's rooftop restaurant, Tudor Hall, is one of the most photographed dining rooms in Athens for its unobstructed view across Syntagma to the floodlit Acropolis and Lycabettus Hill, and it has held a place among the city's higher-end dining rooms for years. Below street level, the GB Spa (shared infrastructure with the Grande Bretagne) offers an indoor pool, sauna and treatment rooms accessible to King George guests, a useful counterpoint to a hotel whose historic footprint does not allow for large outdoor grounds.

Syntagma itself functions as the transit hinge of central Athens: the Syntagma metro station beneath the square carries both the Blue (M3, airport) and Red (M2) lines, so the hotel doubles as a base for day trips to the coast or Delphi without needing a car. The changing of the Evzones guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier happens directly across the square on the hour, visible from several of the hotel's upper floors.
