Bleilochtalsperre — Strandbad Saalburg

Strandbad Saalburg sits on the eastern shore of the Bleilochtalsperre, the largest reservoir in Thuringia and one of the biggest artificial lakes in Germany, often nicknamed the "Thuringian Sea." The lido has a grass and gravel shoreline rather than fine sand, sloping gently into clear, greenish reservoir water that stays cool even in high summer. The bay in front of the beach is sheltered by wooded hillsides, so wind and surf are minimal, making it a calm, open stretch of water well suited to families and casual swimmers rather than a party scene. A roped-off swimming platform marks the designated bathing area, with boat and pedal-boat hire available alongside for those who want to explore farther up the reservoir toward Ziegenrück. Basic amenities include changing rooms, cold-water showers, a kiosk serving snacks and drinks, and a beach volleyball court set back from the water. There is no lifeguard on permanent duty outside peak summer weekends, so swimmers should judge conditions themselves. Parking is available in a signed lot a short walk from the beach, and the site gets busy on warm weekends from late June through August, when arriving before midday secures easier parking and a spot on the grass. Public transport is limited: the nearest regional rail stop is Saalfeld (Saale), from where a local bus or taxi covers the remaining distance to Saalburg-Ebersdorf, so most visitors arrive by car. The surrounding Bleiloch valley offers hiking and cycling trails along the shoreline and forested slopes, and the reservoir's size means quieter coves can be found by walking or paddling a short distance from the main lido.
