Bergsee Ratscher

Bergsee Ratscher is a natural swimming lake near Schleusingen in the Thuringian Forest, about 75 kilometres south of Erfurt, set within a wooded valley that gives the lake a secluded, forest-ringed character. The shoreline is grass rather than sand, and the water is clear, drawing swimmers who prefer a natural lake setting over the region's larger managed reservoirs. Because the lake is relatively small and enclosed by forest on most sides, it stays sheltered from wind, with calm, flat water that suits recreational swimmers and families more than open-water or surf-style swimming. A kiosk on site sells basic snacks and drinks, and pedal boats can be hired for exploring the small lake, though the main draw remains the surrounding forest scenery and quiet atmosphere rather than an extensive amenities list. There are no formal changing rooms or showers, so visitors typically arrive prepared to change discreetly among the trees or bring a beach robe. The lake's location within the Thuringian Forest makes it a popular stop for hikers exploring nearby trails, and several walking paths connect the lake to the wider forest network around Schleusingen. Reaching Bergsee Ratscher without a car requires taking a regional train to Suhl or Schleusingen and continuing by local bus, which runs infrequently, so most visitors drive. Parking is available near the lake but limited, filling up on warm summer weekends.
