Luebeck from Hamburg

Luebeck sits 65 km northeast of Hamburg in Schleswig-Holstein and is reached by direct Deutsche Bahn regional trains from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof in 45-50 minutes, with departures roughly every half hour, making it one of the easiest UNESCO World Heritage day trips from northern Germany. Visitors arriving at Luebeck Hauptbahnhof cross the Puppenbruecke bridge into the Altstadt, an island old town ringed by the Trave river and dominated by the twin-towered Holstentor gate, the city's brick-Gothic landmark and former customs house, now a small museum on Hanseatic trade. A typical morning starts at the Holstentor and the adjoining Salzspeicher warehouses before heading into the old town to see the Rathaus, Marienkirche's soaring brick nave, and the Buddenbrookhaus, the former home of the Mann family and a museum devoted to Thomas Mann's novel of the same name. Niederegger, the marzipan house founded in 1806, sits opposite the Rathaus on Breite Strasse and is worth a stop for a coffee and a slice of marzipan cake. Afternoons suit a walk along the Trave promenade toward the harbor district, or a visit to the European Hansemuseum, which traces the Hanseatic League's trading network across the Baltic and North Seas. The Altstadt's narrow Gaenge (courtyard alleys) reward slower wandering between the main sights. Luebeck is a year-round destination: summer favors river cruises and the old town's outdoor cafes, while the Christmas market held on the Rathaus square and Marktplatz from late November through December draws visitors for Gluehwein and Luebecker marzipan gifts. Arriving by mid-morning leaves enough daylight for both the churches and the museums before an early-evening train back to Hamburg; the town's compact size means most sights are within a 15-20 minute walk of each other, and no more than a couple of hours of walking total is needed to cover the highlights.
