Fehmarn Island from Luebeck

Fehmarn is a Baltic Sea island connected to the mainland by the Fehmarnsundbruecke bridge, about 75 km from Luebeck by the A1 motorway, a drive of roughly 1 hour 15 minutes, or about 1 hour 45 minutes by regional train from Luebeck to Oldenburg in Holstein with a connecting bus to Burg auf Fehmarn. The island's main town, Burg auf Fehmarn, has a compact center with shops and cafes, while the resort village of Burgtiefe on the southern coast offers sandy beaches and a marina. A typical day trip crosses the Fehmarnsundbruecke in the morning, stops in Burg auf Fehmarn for a walk through the town center, and continues to Burgtiefe or one of the island's other beach villages for the afternoon. Fehmarn's flat terrain and extensive network of cycle paths make bike rental a popular way to link the beach villages without a car; bikes can typically be rented near the harbor or in Burg. The island is known for reliable, strong winds that draw windsurfers and sailors to spots along the southern and western coasts throughout the year, in addition to its family-friendly beaches in summer. Food stops include harborside fish restaurants in Burgtiefe and bakeries in Burg auf Fehmarn's old town. For onward travelers, the Puttgarden-Rodby car ferry departs from the island's northern tip toward Denmark, making Fehmarn a possible stopover for a longer Scandinavian trip as well as a standalone day out. The beaches are busiest and warmest from May through September, but the island's steady winds mean watersports enthusiasts visit throughout the year. Because the island is flat and its main sights are close to bus stops or short bike rides, this is a light day out with minimal walking required.
