Marksburg

Marksburg stands 150 meters above the town of Braubach on a hilltop above the Rhine, distinguished from every other castle on the Middle Rhine by the fact that it was never destroyed, besieged successfully, or substantially rebuilt, preserving its medieval form more faithfully than any of its neighbors. Access is by guided tour only, which winds through the gatehouse, the battery with historic cannons, the knights' hall, the chapel, and a kitchen equipped with utensils and cooking arrangements typical of the period, giving a concrete sense of daily castle life rather than just its military role. A separate herb garden cultivated with medieval plant varieties sits within the castle grounds. The approach itself, an uphill walk of about 20 minutes from Braubach's train station on the Rhine's right bank, offers views across the river to the vineyards and villages on the opposite side, part of the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The guided tour runs about 50 minutes, and with the walk up and down, a full visit takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours. Because tours depart in groups at set times rather than continuously, arriving on a weekday morning improves the odds of a smaller group and less waiting between tour departures. The battlements and towers give some of the best unobstructed views over the Rhine gorge of any castle in the valley, particularly from the upper courtyard.
