Basilika St. Kastor

Basilika St. Kastor is Koblenz's oldest church, consecrated in 836 under Emperor Louis the Pious and standing at the point where the Rhine and Moselle meet, immediately beside the Deutsches Eck monument. Its plain Romanesque exterior with twin towers gives little outward sign of the church's outsized role in European history: in 843, it hosted the negotiations that produced the Treaty of Verdun, the agreement that divided the Carolingian Empire among Charlemagne's three grandsons and effectively laid the groundwork for the later separation of France and Germany as distinct political entities. Inside, the nave retains Romanesque proportions beneath later Baroque vaulting added in the 17th and 18th centuries, along with historic tombs and a Baroque high altar. Because the church is compact compared to Rhineland cathedrals like Trier or Worms, a visit is quick, typically 20-30 minutes, making it an easy addition to a walk around the Deutsches Eck and the confluence promenade rather than a standalone destination. The church is free to enter and generally open during daylight hours, with reduced hours in winter. Its location directly on the riverside gardens means it pairs naturally with photographs of the Deutsches Eck's equestrian monument and the view across to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress on the opposite bank. There is no particular crowding concern at this site, since most visitors passing through the Deutsches Eck area do not detour into the church itself, leaving it comparatively quiet even when the riverside gardens outside are busy.
