Nuerburgring Touristenfahrten (Tourist Drive Laps)

Touristenfahrten are open, self-drive sessions on the Nuerburgring Nordschleife in the Eifel hills of Rhineland-Palatinate, where any driver with a valid road licence can bring a registered, roadworthy car or motorcycle onto the historic 20.8km circuit. Sessions run under German road traffic rules (StVO) rather than closed-circuit racing rules: overtaking is only permitted on the left, and drivers are expected to drive defensively, since vehicles ranging from touring motorcycles to supercars and rental race cars share the track at the same time. No driving qualification beyond a standard licence is required, but the Nordschleife's blind crests, changing camber and roughly 300 metres of elevation change reward prior experience and a cautious pace on a first visit. Vehicles must be roadworthy and insured; motorcyclists must wear a helmet, and drivers should wear closed shoes and secure loose items. There is no professional instructor accompanying tourist-drive vehicles, so drivers are responsible for their own pace, line and awareness of faster traffic overtaking from behind; recovery vehicles and marshal posts are stationed around the lap to assist with breakdowns, and a red-flag system stops all traffic when the track needs to be cleared. Nuerburgring GmbH, the circuit operator, runs and schedules the Touristenfahrten sessions directly, selling tickets per lap or as multi-lap packages at the gate or online. The tourist-drive season runs from April through October, weather permitting; sessions are suspended in icy, snowy or heavy fog conditions and can close early for accidents or track maintenance.
