Hot Air Ballooning over the Moselle Vineyards

Hot air ballooning over the Moselle Valley carries passengers in a shared wicker basket above the terraced vineyards and tight river bends near Cochem, Bernkastel-Kues and St. Aldegund in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. No fitness or ballooning experience is required, though standing for the full flight and climbing into the basket over its rim call for reasonable mobility; most operators set a minimum age of around 6-8 years and may exclude pregnant passengers or those with certain heart or spinal conditions. Flights depend entirely on calm wind and clear visibility, so operators fly only in the early morning or, less commonly, the evening, confirming or cancelling each flight on the morning itself once conditions are assessed; dates often need to be held flexible across a multi-day window. Ballonsport Team, based in Dreis, and Ballonpilot Carter, flying from St. Aldegund, are the two established operators covering this stretch of the valley, both flying licensed pilots with commercial ballooning certification. The full experience runs about three to four hours, including inflation and a safety briefing on the ground, a flight of roughly one to one and a half hours drifting with the wind, and a landing in a vineyard or open meadow followed by the traditional champagne toast. The safety briefing covers landing posture and holding on to the basket's internal straps during the final descent, which can be a firmer touchdown than passengers expect; a ground crew follows the balloon by vehicle throughout and assists with the landing. The season runs from May through October, when mornings are reliably calm enough for a smooth ascent over the valley.
