The Hohenzollernbrücke is the railway and pedestrian bridge that links Cologne's Altstadt-Nord with Deutz across the Rhine, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. For photographers it offers two distinct frames. Walking east toward Deutz, the cathedral rises behind the steel arches and the railway tracks, with trains passing at close range. Looking back from the Deutz side, the bridge itself becomes the foreground leading line toward the twin spires. The pedestrian walkways on both sides are lined with railing fences, which are famous for the many thousands of love locks attached to them, and these provide strong foreground texture for detail shots. The best light comes at blue hour, when the cathedral is floodlit and the bridge lights reflect in the water, and in early morning when the walkway is nearly empty. Autumn mist and winter evenings are especially atmospheric, and overcast weather softens the steel structure. Midday sun creates harsh shadows between the girders. The bridge is among the busiest photo locations in the city, with tourists, cyclists and commuters crowding the walkways, so tripods are a real obstruction and should stay out of the walking lane or be replaced with a handheld stabilised approach. The railway side is fenced and no access beyond the walkways is permitted, so rail tracks must not be entered. Drone flights are restricted in the city centre and over the bridge and railway, so they should be avoided unless authorised. There is no access fee. Wide-angle lenses of 16-35 mm capture the arches and cathedral together, while a telephoto from the Deutz side compresses bridge and spires. Restrooms and cafes are available at the Hauptbahnhof and around the Deutz station.
