Local hazards
What to watch out for on the trail.
Hazard: Ticks: ticks are present in the Königsforst, Wahner Heide, Stadtwald and Dünnwalder Wald from March to October and can transmit Lyme disease; wear long trousers, check skin after walks and use repellent.
Hazard: Protected areas: in the Wahner Heide nature reserve only paths marked with red posts may be used, and leaving them can damage heathland and attract fines.
Hazard: Mud and wet ground: forest paths in the Königsforst and meadow routes at the Worringer Bruch can be muddy after rain; waterproof shoes are advisable.
Hazard: Cyclists and joggers: Rhine-side promenades and green-belt paths are shared with cyclists; keep to the right and listen for bells.
Hazard: Hunting and forestry: in the Königsforst and Wahner Heide, forestry work or hunting may close or divert sections; follow signs and diversions.
Hazard: Weather: thunderstorms can develop quickly on warm summer afternoons; open heath and Rhine meadows offer little shelter.
Hazard: Emergency: the European emergency number is 112; mobile coverage is good in and around the city.
