Köln (Cologne) travel guide - where to stay, what to do, and where to eat in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
Koeln nightlife runs from Brauhäuser serving Koelsch in the Altstadt, to bars and clubs in Ehrenfeld, the Belgisches Viertel and the student Zülpicher Viertel, plus concert halls on both banks of the Rhine. Evenings start in a Brauhaus from about 5PM, move to bars around 9PM and to clubs after midnight.
Koeln's scene is open and Veedel-based: Altstadt Brauhäuser for Koelsch, the Belgisches Viertel for cocktail bars, Zülpicher Straße for student parties, Ehrenfeld for electronic music and live gigs (Live Music Hall, Artheater, Odonien), and Deutz and Mülheim for larger venues (Gebäude 9, E-Werk, LANXESS arena). Karneval turns the whole city into a street party from Weiberfastnacht.

Nightlife tips
Stay safe and have fun.
Late transport: KVB Stadtbahn and buses run reduced night services; Friday and Saturday night lines fill the gaps. Check kvb.koeln or the KVB app for exact times.
In a Brauhaus, put your beer mat on top of the glass to stop the Köbes bringing more Koelsch; pay when you ask 'Zahlen, bitte'.
Keep valuables in a front pocket around the Hauptbahnhof, Ebertplatz and the Ring in the early hours, and during Karneval crowds.
Use licensed taxis (rank at the Hauptbahnhof) or the Uber and FreeNow apps; the emergency number is 112 (police 110).
Bring photo ID; clubs check age (minimum 18, some 21).
Karneval (Weiberfastnacht to Rosenmontag, 4-8 February 2027) draws very large crowds; expect rooms to sell out months ahead and bars to be packed from the morning.
