Stralsund UNESCO Old Town

Stralsund lies 88 km northeast of Rostock on a peninsula between the Strelasund strait and two Baltic lagoons, reached in about an hour via the direct RE regional train from Rostock Hauptbahnhof to Stralsund Hauptbahnhof (also linked to Berlin by a roughly 2.5-hour IC service). Drivers can follow the A19/A20 motorway in about the same time. The UNESCO-listed Old Town, a showcase of North German brick-Gothic Hanseatic architecture, centers on the Alter Markt, ringed by ornately gabled merchant houses and the Rathaus's stepped brick facade. Morning visitors can climb the tower of St. Marien church for rooftop views over the lagoons before wandering the surrounding lanes of restored 14th- and 15th-century houses. The afternoon is best spent at the Ozeaneum, the harbor-front aquarium that traces Baltic and North Sea marine life through large tank displays and a life-size whale skeleton hall, or strolling the harbor promenade past the museum ship fleet. Between sights, the Alter Markt and the streets around St. Nikolai church hold cafes and Fischbrötchen fish-roll stands serving the herring and Baltic sprat catch typical of the region. The Old Town rewards a visit in any season thanks to its indoor churches and aquarium, but May through September brings the longest museum hours and calmest weather for walking the harbor and lagoon-side promenades. Arriving by the mid-morning train leaves enough daylight for both the Old Town churches and the Ozeaneum before an early-evening train back to Rostock.
