Greifswald and the Caspar David Friedrich Sites

Greifswald lies about 105 km northeast of Rostock and 30 km from Stralsund, reached in roughly 1.5 hours by RE train from Rostock with a change at Stralsund, or in about 30-40 minutes directly from Stralsund; drivers can take the A20/B96 from Stralsund in about 30 minutes. The red-brick Hanseatic university town was the birthplace of Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich, and its preserved Markt square, ringed by gabled merchant houses, remains recognizable from his early works. A morning walk through the center takes in the Markt, the brick-Gothic Dom St. Nikolai cathedral, and the university quarter before heading toward the harbor along the Ryck river, a scene Friedrich painted repeatedly. The afternoon suits the walk or short bus ride out to the ruined Eldena Abbey, a former Cistercian monastery whose broken Gothic arches were the subject of some of Friedrich's best-known canvases and remain freely accessible as a ruin within a small park. Cafes around the Markt and near the university serve lunch, and the harbor area has casual seafood options. Greifswald is walkable year-round thanks to its compact center, but April through October is best for the walk out to Eldena Abbey, since the ruin and surrounding grounds are more comfortable to explore in mild weather. A same-day round trip from Rostock is feasible with an early departure, while a Stralsund-based visitor can treat it as a shorter half-day extension.
