Darß Peninsula and the Crooked Forest

The Darß Peninsula lies about 65 km northeast of Rostock within the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park, reached in roughly 1.5 hours via an RE train to Ribnitz-Damgarten West followed by a connecting Darß bus to Born, Wieck, or Prerow; drivers can follow the B105 via Ribnitz-Damgarten in about 1-1.5 hours. The peninsula's best-known sight is the Gespensterwald, or 'crooked forest,' near Nienhagen, where centuries of Baltic wind have bent the trunks of beech and pine trees into low, twisted forms reachable by a short walking trail. A morning visit suits the forest walk combined with a stop at the Nationalpark-Zentrum Kranichhaus in Born, which explains the lagoon and dune ecosystem and the national park's seasonal crane migrations. The afternoon is well spent on the peninsula's wild dune beaches, backed by pine forest and largely undeveloped compared to resort towns further along the coast, or in the small harbor town of Prerow, where fish restaurants and cafes line the waterfront. The flat terrain also suits cycling the Ostseeküsten-Radweg coastal route, which runs the length of the peninsula and can be combined with the bus connections for a partial ride. Small guesthouses and snack stands in Born, Wieck, and Prerow serve regional fish dishes and cakes. The peninsula rewards a May through September visit for beach weather, though October brings the red deer rutting season (Hirschbrunft), when the national park offers guided early-morning and evening viewing walks. Given the bus connection times, a full day should be budgeted for this trip.
