Brocken Summit via the Goetheweg from Torfhaus

The Goetheweg is the broadest and gentlest of the classic routes up the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz National Park and in northern Germany at 1,141 meters. The trail begins at the TorfHaus visitor center, reached by Bus 830 from Bad Harzburg or Braunlage, with a free car park directly outside; no permit is required to enter the national park. From Torfhaus the route follows a wide, well-graded gravel track, a former border patrol road, for roughly 8 kilometers each way, gaining about 440 meters over open moorland and low spruce before crossing above the treeline onto the exposed summit plateau. The gravel surface is even and largely free of technical difficulty, though the final approach to the summit is fully exposed to wind and weather with no tree cover, so conditions can shift quickly even in summer. Along the way the trail passes the Grosser Sonnenberg viewpoint, a reasonable turn-around point for a shorter outing, and skirts stretches of raised boardwalk protecting the fragile Brocken moor habitat. Near the top the Goetheweg meets the tracks of the historic Brockenbahn narrow-gauge steam railway, which some hikers use for a one-way return. The summit itself holds the Brockenhaus visitor center and museum, a restaurant and kiosk offering food and water refills, the restored Brockengarten alpine botanical garden, and the domed Wolkenhäuschen weather observation building. There are no huts or water sources along the open moorland stretch between Torfhaus and the summit, so hikers should carry sufficient water for the full round trip. In winter and early spring the upper sections hold snow and ice well into April, and the route is popular then with snowshoers.
